That was too Easy

A click here and a click there and poof - I have my first post on my very own blog!!

So, let's talk Turkey!! The last couple of days I've heard everyone talking about their Thanksgiving plans. Some are staying home and cooking, others are going to another family member's home. They all talk about making the grocery list and the shopping and of course what different kinds of things each family prepares as their Thanksgiving traditional meal. My Mom and Dad are hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year. While I'm not going to be there this year, I can imagine that all traditions will be carried out to the fullest.

The staples of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner include turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy. Sweet potatoes will get made this year because Shawna will be home and that's her favorite. Deanna will choose between broccoli casserole or rice salad, but since both have rice in them, she'll only expect that one will be on the table. Mom has already made the pies, both pumpkin and apple.

When Mom hosts she does it all, unlike some families who divide the meal among people and everyone is responsible for one part. In our family, Shawna (who doesn't like to cook) will be responsible for setting the table. She'll make the most elegant table with whatever Mom has around for a tablecloth and centerpiece. She'll decide on the dishes and everything will be perfectly placed. Everyone will have assigned seating, but no place cards this year (because I didn't make them). Deanna will help out with the relish tray and salad. When it comes time to serve the meal, both sisters will pitch in and start filling serving bowls. Wine glasses will be set at the table, but most will pass or they will have a glass of wine to make a toast and then the remaining amount will sit there through the meal. Not a big "wine" family.

Mom will carve the turkey, then make the gravy and finally she'll mash the spuds. I can see her now, with the pot of spuds on the kitchen stool (because she's too short to keep it on the counter and still be able to mash) mashing and then stirring. She'll say that they aren't just the way she wants them, but nobody will complain nor will they even notice whatever Mom thinks is wrong with them.

As they sit down to dinner, Saige will be asked to say the blessing. When finished, the food passing will begin. For years we've passed the food clockwise, but Saige and Aunt De will tell you that we should be passing to the right if we are going to follow the proper food etiquette.

Once the meal has been completely devoured, Mom will ask everyone if they want pie. The standard response will be "pienow" or "pielater", at which point then those eating pie will and those not will either race to the most relaxing chair for a nap or they will make plans to go do something outdoors (usually the weather has a lot to do with that decision).

So, in a nutshell - that's Thanksgiving Dinner at the Drugge house. Hope everyone enjoys their feast this Thanksgiving.
